Michigan-based songwriter Dawn Xiana Moon has roots in Singapore where she was born coming to the U.S. at age 5 when her father got a job transfer to Farmington Hills.

She returned to Singapore with her family after less than a year but was back at age 6 after the family had decided to settle in the United States permanently, she told Michael Teach of Chicago Acoustic Underground recently.

You can download the entire 27 minute podcast here with music and interviews, but be ware dial-up users. It’s going to take a while.

Or visit the Chicago Acoustic Underground site to sample a growing archive of independent music podcasts here.

Dawn also maintains a website and blog with more photos like the one above, writings on a variety of issues and has a CD for sale.

Spoon slide guitarist offers unique sound

Hannes Coetzee

Watch this YouTube video clip of South African spoon slide guitarist Hannes Coetzee from the David Kramer documentary Karoo Kitaar Blues.

Coetzee’s notability is still being debated for inclusion by editors over at Wikipedia and frankly the music is new to me, but my own two cents is that it deserves a wider audience based only on the little I’ve heard.

Visit David Kramer’s homepage for more info and for music from Coetzee and other musicians from around the world be sure to check out Calabash Music, dubbed the world’s first fair trade music company.

Add any thoughts including more information on music available from Coetzee below.

Contribute to our independent music network

Since before your sun burned hot in space and before your race was born, I have awaited a question.

                                                         –The Guardian of Forever

One reader of this site, chippy_the_kay, recently shared a great idea for building a sense of community here at the n10ah network and I’m going to take him, and everyone else, up on it.

Chippy suggested listing a couple of topics for comment by our burgeoning audience with the hopes of getting some discussion and debate going on the topic of independent music.

So without further adieu here are some questions for independent music fans in no particular order of importance and I hope answers will be forthcoming in the comment section as the beginnings of ongoing discussion threads.

(By the way, some readers have also expressed interest in my own musical ambitions and accomplishments. More on that and some offerings from other folks connected to this site will be forthcoming so please stay tuned.)

*Another Note: The photos for the next few posts are from Dennis Hill’s great 9,100 free photos site. Dennis and his friends offer these photos free on the Net without need for attribution, but I like to give props and link back to creative people online whenever possible.

How to be a musician

Learn to be a musician humor

Canada’s The Tutorialist may have single-handedly reinvented the instructional video for the digital age…with a heavy dose of satire.

Have a look at the clip and see if it inspires you to pick up a guitar and find that “sweet spot” or to take up the harp for you “liars” out there.

For a fresh look at the nine to five grind you may also want to check out The Tutorialist’s “Work” as well and visit www.thetutorialist.com for more “scores of planetary minutiae.”
